Millis Reads
Started in 2013 as a joint venture of the Millis Public Library and Millis Public Schools, Millis Reads is an effort to strengthen ties throughout the Millis community by encouraging everyone in town to read and discuss the same book. The goal of Millis Reads is to promote literacy for all ages, to foster community dialog, and to broaden understanding and tolerance of differing points of view.
This year, we have chosen a single narrative to discuss, one relevant to multiple aspects of our society. The library will host a variety programs and events that will give you the chance to dive deeper into the themes of the book and we invite you to discuss and share stories that relate to it. All events will be held at the library unless otherwise noted. Books are at the library in print as well as in other formats, if available (large print, ebook, audiobook). Millis Reads is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Millis Public Library.
The Book

Everyone knows Beartown is a hockey town. And everyone in Beartown knows someone who is connected to hockey, from the lonely owner of the local bar to the former athlete now managing the supermarket. In a town dying from economic decay and isolated by the surrounding wilderness, Beartown needs its junior hockey team to bring home the championship and bring in tourism and sponsorship dollars to keep the town alive. The son of a wealthy businessman and team patron, Kevin is the squad’s superstar. Amat is an immigrant whose speed and skill on the ice may be his ticket to popularity. Maya is the daughter of the team’s beloved general manager. When the paths of these three collide in the supercharged aftermath of a decisive game, the town’s financial survival rests on the moral convictions of its most vulnerable citizens.
